Sofia the Dreamer and the Looking Glass Pages
It all started when…
The final story in the ‘Sofia the Dreamer’ series spotlights the magic of books.
Tumbling into a page whilst reading, Sofia finds herself in a multiverse, exchanging one dreamscape for another as she encounters three preeminent female writers of colour and their work first-hand, Toni Morrison, Zadie Smith and Louise Bennett.
Inspired by her poem, ‘I am not seaworthy,’ Sofia finds renowned African American author Toni Morrison beneath the ocean, before meeting British Zadie Smith in the realm of White Teeth’s North London above the surface. She finally finds herself in Jamaica of yesteryears, experiencing oral storytelling traditions with the island’s cultural icon Louise Bennett.
‘The Looking Glass Pages’ not only aims to introduce these spectacular, ground-breaking and inspiring characters to children as early as possible in an imaginative and whimsical manner.
The wheel comes full circle at the story’s denouement when Sofia’s reading experience stirs her to pen her own life, scribing the first book of the series, ‘Sofia’s Magical Afro’:
“Every Sunday afternoon,
Sofia’s mum washes and combs her hair.
Whenever anyone touches her magical afro,
Sofia becomes very sleepy…”
The cycle continues as the writings of one author spark the bud and bloom of another’s.
